HBC Summit 2017 Review

Heads up it’s a bit of a long one, but there was just so much to talk about so pleeeaaasssseee have a good read and enjoy xx

Last Saturday I travelled up to London for the HBC Summit which was organised and hosted by Fab and her amazing team at The Hotxon Hotel in Shoreditch.

It was great to see so many people at the sell out event and there was so much on offer, I could have stayed for days!!!

The event started with a super yummy breakfast bowels provided by bounce balls. My bowl was packed full of a variety of their new bounce bites mixed in with yoghurt  and topped with blueberries, raspberries and strawberries.

It was the perfect way to start the day.

On the way into the event I met Jennifer and we started chatting and ended up spending the rest of the day together. This is one of the main reasons that I love these sorts of events as it gives you the opportunity to meet new people and to put real life faces to the people you see and stalk on instagram. After a lovely catch up with the lovely Audrey, we headed into the first panel discussion of the day. The panel was hosted by the lovely and straight talking plantbasedpixie and she was joined by thedoctorskitchen, Laura Thomas and theangrychef. The panel discussion addressed the topic of ‘Nutrition and Nutribollocks’. It was refreshing to hear the perspective of the professionals on the issues of diet, nutrition, the impact of influencer led diet fads and the need for some basic common sense and actual scientific evidence. They highlighted the importance of not just listening and following a fad based on the journey of one ‘influencer’ because you have tracked their progress and results through social media. One persons experience doesn’t constitute scientific research, or mean that it is necessarily a healthy option.

I then took the opportunity to look around the ‘garden store’ which were packed with fabulous brands, all looking to showcase their products. My favourite two which deserve a shout out have to be FRILL and HIPPEAS.
FRILL are a frozen smoothie brand, so instead of an ice cream or a drink of smoothie, they have mixed it up and created a frozen smoothie. Now you would think ok cool but really is it that good? YESSSS get yourself to your nearest store that stocks it ASAP and get it in your life!!

HIPPEAS are vegan crisp that are made from organic chickpeas, they are high in fibre, a source of protein and gluten free. Now I have tried many a ‘healthy’ alternative to crisps, but no word of a lie these were amazing. They are a puff snack (like a Wostit) and they are packed full of flavours. I have now devoured 4 out of 5 flavours and so far none of them have disappointed, so its safe to say I back the last flavour once I get my hands on it!

The afternoon was then made up of two more panel discussions. The first was with the inspirational thefoodmedic and total girl boss Fab Giovanetti. They discussed how Hazel build her brand of the food medic. The brands she has collaborated with, including a special shout out to Linwoods who she is currently collaborating with. They then went on to talk about how she manages her time, juggling being a full time junior  doctor and creating and sustaining her brand and image. For me this gave me a lot of inspiration and motivation for being able to manage the last couple of months university, my part job and flexwithbex.

The last panel of the day was lead by cleaneatingalice. She was discussing how we foolproof ourselves against foolish fitness, with discussion from her own PT Luke W from Third Space, Amy Hopkinson the online editor of Womens Health and Jonny Lomax of Lomax gyms. I managed to grab a spot on the floor and was literally looking up to this panel who I’m all completely in awe of. There was a bit of divide on the panel on how gym classes should fit into your fitness schedule, but ultimately for each, they agreed that you should always listen to your body and take care of it. Recovery was key word used here. Both Luke and Jonny discussed how to include recovery into your routine, be it foam rolling or stretching. Amy spoke about how she takes 5 minutes at the beginning of her session to foam roll, this helps to make her present in her session and focus on herself rather than social media or the busy world around us.  All of the points raised here brought different suggestions and perspectives, but a lot of interesting points to think about.

Overall the day was jammed packed full of lots of goodies and information and it was great to meet so many like minded people!
